Fifteen year old Kambili and her brother Jaja live a comfortable, privileged life in Nigeria. Not all is well however, as their father, a successful businessman, is a religious fanatic who regularly beats his wife and children, with horrific consequences. Kambili and Jaja experience a different kind of life when they visit their aunt Ifeoma, where there is joy, books and freedom. The children, as well as their mother, begin to challenge the father’s authority, which leads to a dramatic finale.
I really enjoyed this book and the insight it gives in the lives of Nigerian families. The characters are well crafted, and evolve beautifully as the story unfolds.
