At a time when many of us wonder about the complexities of the Middle East and the effect it has on women, this book is one that should be read. Not only for the clever and intriguing storyline, but a book that gives an ‘educated view’ into the foundations of past and present conflicts, albeit through fiction.

From the first page the author sucks you in with her tale, chiding you to read more and more. Totally enthralling as the plot unravels taking you from Oklahoma to Saudi Arabia, weaving story with glimpses of a culture that few have experienced.

Kim Barnes writes through the eyes of Gil as she moves to Saudi Arabia in the 60’s. The descriptions of compound life with illicit booze, friendships and rivalries, little for women to do other than try to fill the long hours.

A story where lives count for little when there is money at stake, when talking to the wrong person leaves loved ones vulnerable and exposed.
