The Rachel Savernake books reinvent Golden Age tropes in various ways and the author lays out any clues that the reader might have missed at the back of the novel under “Cluefinder”. This is a fun addition!

Rachel is attending an exhibition which features live models dressed as famous killers and the artist Damaris Gethrin invites her to solve my murder but the staging is all too real and he dies in the guillotine. Is it murder or suicide?

She surrounds herself with a cast of interesting characters who, true to form, assist her in her sleuthing, as they come across unsavoury characters thwarting their ambitions. This is a well-conceived and at times quite witty whodunnit.

If you love Golden Age mysteries, then it is worth reading the books in order. These provide a wonderful glimpse into the era, with a good sense of place.
