A fabulous book with a profound sense of time and place that evokes 1930s Malaya – a cultural mix of colonial British, Chinese and native Malay inhabitants.
I loved the way that the local superstitions were incorporated into the narrative and Ren’s quest to reunite the missing finger of his master within 49 days adds pace to the story.
The prowling tiger will have far-reaching consequences as Ren and Ji lin find their fates intertwine.
The lushness of the setting is matched only by the beauty of the language in this delicious story. Simply beautiful.
