Victoria Hislop has a very particular style of writing which continues with this book. It feels like she is very detached from what is happening to her characters, like she is watching a world in a bubble and commenting on it. I like her style of writing and have enjoyed her other books immensely. This book got off to a slower start for me. For the first third of the book I did not feel very strongly about any of the characters nor any passion about the hotel that was built and I was starting to think that I would not be enjoying this book as much as the authors other books. However I began to be riveted when the troubles really began and the characters become more 3D. I enjoyed the fact that the two families trying to survive were from opposite sides and that the women were the driving force for peace between the families which the men eventually came to understand. The fact that it was not a ‘they all lived happily ever after’ lifted the story and in my eyes made it stronger, as indeed many innocent people suffered enormously during the troubles in Cyprus. It also gave me an insight into the conflict as I have to confess I only knew the bare minimum about it prior to reading this book. So all in all another great book from Victoria Hislop writing about a part of the world she knows well and feels passionate about.
