Richard Weihe reconstructs the life of Chinese painter Bada Shanren. Opening in the throes of political instability, Zhu Da must escape his political constraints to become the artist. Through numerous name changes and pseudonyms he becomes Bada Shanren, mastering Buddhism and Confucian philosophy. His ink paintings are even interspersed throughout the pages as a lovely effect of the realist prose and two tone ink drawings reflect each other. Its Orwellian without the irony and menace as Peirene bring another contemporary gem into the UK market.
