As someone who would hate to be trapped on a boat with people I don’t know, I found the two couples – one British, one American – in After The Storm fascinating. Unpredictable weather, novice sailors and the confined space of a boat in need of serious maintenance ratchets up the tension between them, as they skirt around each other, trying to hide their fears. A sense of menace pervades the story and when they reach the island of Roatan, secrets emerge which test the four protagonists to the limit.
Jane Lythell was particularly skilful at keeping the reader guessing, calling into question the motivations of each character until I wasn’t sure who to trust. Throughout the novel, there’s a sense of both great beauty and great danger.

I’d never heard of Roatan before (it’s in the Caribbean) but the description of lush hillsides, abundant palms, secluded bays, pristine reefs and clear waters means it should be paradise! But of course, it’s a psychological drama…so nothing is as it seems. Great read.
