Set in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s – just as segregation is about to end. The story of black maids working for white families, and of the white journalist who decided to publicise their experiences on the national stage. An excellent and heartwarming read that is evocative of the time and place. Kathryn Stockett grew up in Jackson, and this had to be based on her real life experiences. A look into what in reality is a bygone age – even if only half a century ago.
