The novel, set in the period of the 1990 Gulf War, tells the stories of a number of residents of The Yacoubian Building in the former European quarter of Cairo. These residents are of very different social status and background, but each of them has to deal with hardships such as corruption, sexual repression and harassment, religious extremism, poverty and so on. Despite the seriousness of these subjects, the tone of the novel is rather light, and the book remains readable and compelling throughout.
