There seem to be plenty of books around about the Spanish Civil War and its consequences, not always written with a fluency one might hope for. This is one of them. The characters feel rather wooden and lifeless and I didn’t really warm to this book. There is little elegance in the writing and I got bogged down in irrelevant detail….
