This is not the sort of book I would normally read

This is not the sort of book I would normally read and the depiction of the war scenes is certainly not what I would want to read too often. I found the writing very compelling and believable although I do not think a policeman without any training would make his way to the front line and return safely more than once when so many millions of men were being killed and injured. Apart from this incident this was a good story and portrayed the reality and futility of war and the doubts and fears of the soldiers fighting in it.
