This captures so well the trials and tribulations of travelling – one family packed into a car with two small children under school age. Frommers, the travel guide people, are looking for a family to tour England looking at, and evaluating popular and not-so-popular tourist sites. It takes them away from home for 5 months and they cover 8000 miles which is a feat for anyone, frankly. There are some interesting sojourns, some visits that are a real caper, and some venues that are really boring. Ben has a backstory in that his Dad is very ill and declining as the trip progresses. Did I enjoy it? – I guess the truthful answer is yes,but up to a point. It bowled along very nicely, is hugely well observed, and entertaining as far as Hexham and then to my mind it begins to fade and become a tad repetitive and perhaps the increasingly “boring” venues that they visit are reflected in the prose. But it is a “must read” if you have children and want a few tips as to what is a good attraction and what isn’t.
