We are selling the house and going backpacking!
- Book: I Grew My Boobs in China
- Location: China, Mongolia
- Author: Savannah Grace
Most teenagers would just laugh if their parents announced they were selling all of the family possessions and going backpacking for a year. Savannah reacted like most 14-year-old western girls would; she was stubborn, grumpy and didn’t want to go. However, here she is with: 1 back pack, 5 sets of clothes, books and a pack of cards; these became her family’s prized possessions as they started in Hong Kong, then headed to rural China and on to Mongolia. The further they went the more they left behind their western habits. Instead they embraced the hardships and the wonders of life as a backpacker.
Savannah’s older brother was already an experienced back-packer which helped as he understood some of the methods of buying tickets and finding accommodation and food. They had a strict daily budget which rarely allowed for luxuries and they were sensible about buying water. I also believe that travelling as a family group helped them interact with others. Their pack of cards, as well as a great boredom saver, was a talking point and sometimes people that they met joined their games.
It was a wonderful armchair experience, reading about their fears, doubts, experiences and enjoyment of their year. But it doesn’t end here. One year became two and you can read about their adventures into Russia in the next book of the series ‘Back Packs And Bra Straps’.
