I read the first three Andrea Camilleri books in the Salvo Montalbano series. I watched it on TV but missed a lot with the sub titles. They are eminently readable and the storylines amble along.
I just adore Salvo, he is a one off character. I was in Sicily at the time and I started looking for him! The storylines are good and following the relationship between Salvo and his long suffering girlfriend is enticing.
The storylines of all three books, the others being The Terracota Dog and The Snack Thief give you a real introduction to life in Sicily. The inference to gang warfare, the poverty and the opposite opulence is evident and you can see and feel it. There is also reference to the mixed ethnic cultures of Sicily which has been invaded by so many nations over the centuries.
The other aspect of these books that I really liked was that Salvo likes his food and the meals he has are described in detail.

So if you are off to Sicily or just want a good read I can recommend these books. I can’t wait to read the rest and remember my Sicilian holiday.
