- Book: The Ginger Tree
- Location: Beijing (Peking), Tokyo
- Author: Oswald Wynd
This is the story of Mary who travels to Peking to marry her husband to be. But early 1900s society does not permit a woman to stray from the straight and narrow and hers becomes a convoluted, sad but determined life and the main part of the book is set in Tokyo up until the Second World War. It is written in the form of a diary, interwoven with letters and I just loved it – I know Tokyo, so was fascinated to read about how it used to be, how Mary lived in Tsukiji, where of course now stands the Fish Market. If you are interested in Japan then I think you would really like this book – it definitely has the quality for it to be a more main stream book, a good storyline and really transports the reader to Tokyo in the first half of the 20th Century.
