Carol Drinkwater’s Secret Provence

7th November 2021

Carol Drinkwater’s books, sharing her accounts of the early days of taking over her olive farm – Appassionata – and her romance with TV producer Michel, were some of the first titles we added to the www.tripfiction.com database when we set out a decade or so ago. Since then we have delighted in following her progress, along with her move into writing novels. In fact her latest novel “An Act of Love” (set in the Alpes-Maritimes) was our Book of the Month, June 2021. Enjoy a year in Provence with author Carol Drinkwater

Some of you may remember her as Helen, in All Creatures Great and Small.

She is now starring in Channel 5’s “A Year in Provence with Carol Drinkwater” and she beautifully introduces her viewer to her life in Provence, where she lives in the hills above Cannes. Whether it is out and about, inland or along the coast, or sharing more intimate moments with her husband Michel (who is a terrific cook, by the way), there is always something new to discover. All that warming blue sky, too, just what viewers need in Winter!

Enjoy glimpses of life in Provence: she goes swimming around the Underwater Museum at Cannes(faces anchored in the sea bed, created by Jason deCaires Taylor) and off to the Lérins Islands. Cast your eyes over blue gold and discover the natural way to combat olive fruit fly. Delight in the flavours of honey, savour trips to the local market and drool over the dishes that dear Michel serves up. Renovation goes on at the house whilst she is out and about (lucky her 😉) and a short boat ride along the coastline reveals the houses of the rich and famous – you can’t really explore the South of France without a mention of wealth.

When it comes to writing, she took inspiration in part for her most recent novel  – An Act of Love – from the story of the incumbents at Mercier Pharmacy, who took in Jewish refugees and helped them escape during WW2. Indeed there is another novel coming to fruition

The series is full of Mediterranean colour and life and a pleasure to watch! It is on UK’s Channel 5 / Catch Up
