10th March 2026

Novel set in KARDAMYLI (Peloponnese)Beneath the Orange Blossom by Emma Cowell, novel set in KARDAMYLI (Pelopennese)

Ellen is 55 years old, two years ago she lost her husband, John, and now she can start to breathe again. Unbeknownst to those around her, her husband was an abusive and violent man and she stoically succumbed to his controlling nature whilst withholding his true nature from those around her. So often the controller in a couple relationship can appear wonderful to those in their immediate circle and it is only the victim who knows the true situation.

Back in 1988 she and Penny had a carefree time in Greece, specifically in Kardamyli in the Pelopponese and the two resolve now to relive their youthful trip by spending a couple of weeks there. From Kalamata Airport they set off in a beautiful Mercedes cabriolet, with just a nod to Thelma and Louise and freedom. For Ellen, though, returning is a mixed experience. Back then she had a beautiful affair with Aléxandros, which came to an abrupt and sad end because of interference by his mother, Nýsa. Ellen has rued her acquiescence to her demands ever since. One element in her life that has kept her sanity is her incredible talent as a seamstress/dressmaker and as the days pass in Greece, her capabilities are soon called upon.

“Perhaps Greece held the key to unlocking the real Ellen who had been kept prisoner for too long…”

The story is peppered with secrets and, of course, Ellen happens upon Aléxandros but can they ever move on from the devastating breach in their relationship all those years ago. The reason for her abrupt departure is, of course, one of the elements that stokes the tension in the storyline until it is revealed.

This is a story of possible second chances set against a wonderful Grecian backdrop. What does Greece smell of? Let’s try in the words of the author:  “…earthy hillside herbs, tangy citrus notes, fresh ozone, coffee, a hint of tobacco and delicious dry heat…”

Novel set in KARDAMYLI (Peloponnese)A delightfully engaging story that will transport and keep the reader hooked.

If you are a fan of Greece (who isn’t, to be honest), then you will find inspiration in the author’s Social Media posts, as she charts her move to Greece and her early days’ experiences. Follow her on Facebook and TwitterX for charming snippets of her new life in Greece.
