A thriller set in Devon and London

28th July 2018

Morte Point by Robert Parker, a thriller set in Devon and London.

Morte Point is a good old fashioned page turning thriller. A far-fetched plot extremely well told, and a book that moves along at real pace. Not too much time to ponder some of the unlikely action too closely – but that in no way detracts from the read. It is gripping. I read the book in an afternoon and an evening – hard to put down.

Ben Bracken is an ex-army, ex-inmate of Her Majesty’s Prisons, guy who battles for good. The book opens with him shipping back the live (just) body of a wanted villain from the Costa del Sol in a coffin on a commercial flight to the UK – to be collected by his minder in the National Crime Agency. He is deniable and off the radar as far as the NCA is concerned.  A more than useful asset.

His minder, Jeremiah, learns that a flight containing ‘something’ (he know not what) of vital national importance is to be deliberately crashed off Morte Point in Devon as it comes in to land at a nearby RAF base. His superiors frustrate his efforts to investigate, and he becomes suspicious. He calls on action man Ben to go down to Devon, witness the crash, and see what he can find out. He finds something, but he knows not what it is. The efforts of the local police and security services to track him down convince him it is pretty important. He needs to get to Bristol and then to London… A hair-raising journey across Dartmoor follows. A journey in which he teams up with Amina (can’t tell you about her area of expertise – it would be a spoiler) and they eventually reach London. Here they are greeted by political intrigue and shenanigans that go right to the top of government. There are two factions at war. Who can they trust?

The plot culminates in a very strange place – a secure turkey farm in the heart of the British countryside.

As I said, an extremely unlikely story – but one that keeps you absolutely gripped to the end.
