Boekenweek GIVEAWAY! – 2 top titles and a packet of Stroopwafels

9th March 2020

BOEKENWEEK Giveaway! It’s all about the Netherlands.

Boekenweek GIVEAWAY!

2020 marks the 85th Annual Boekenweek (celebrating Dutch Literature in English), which will take place from March 7th – 15th March. This year’s theme is REBELS & DISSENTERS. Indy publishers World Editions are teaming up with Faber and Atlantic to offer some sizzling new Dutch titles!

We have two titles that have been selected to feature in Boekenweek to give away! These 2 top titles and a packet of Stroopwafels (and if you have never had Stroopwafels before, now is the time to try these delicious delicacies – you pop your Stroopwafel on your hot beverage and the heat makes the caramel all gooey and melty!) will be sent to the lucky prizewinner.

Two Blankets, Three Sheets by Rodaan Al Galidi

Amsterdam Airport, 1998. Samir Karim steps off a plane from Vietnam, flushes his fake passport down the toilet, and requests asylum. Fleeing Iraq to avoid conscription into Saddam Hussein’s army, he has spent seven years anonymously wandering through Asia. Now, safely in the heart of Europe, he is sent to an asylum center and assigned a bed in a shared dorm—where he will spend the next nine years. As he navigates his way around the absurdities of Dutch bureaucracy, Samir tries his best to get along with his 500 new housemates. Told with compassion and a unique sense of humor, this is an inspiring tale of survival, a close-up view of the hidden world of refugees and human smugglers, and a sobering reflection of our times.

Ventoux by Bert Wagendorp

During the summer of 1982, six friends–five boys, one girl–climb the legendary Mont Ventoux on their bicycles. A tragic accident claims the life of one of them, the promising poet Peter. Thirty years later, the others find themselves travelling into their past, with their racing bicycles strapped to the car roof, and their inner demons trailing behind them, off to the Provence again. What exactly happened on that mountain thirty years ago, and why are they going back?

My favourite cake/dessert is Malaysia’s Kueh Dadar, which is cooked grated coconut & brown sugar covered with a gelatinous pancake-like substance, coloured green & coated with more grated coconut!
I used to have one every day at the school canteen in Sarawak, where I was teaching!

My favourite biscuit is actually a savoury one from China, it’s called Pop-Pan and is a thin crispy wafer flavoured with spring onion. My nearest Chinese cash-and-carry is out of stock of them at the moment and I may have to venture further afield to source a packet now you’ve made me think about them!

Oreo which I first had when I was in New York in my McFlurry! At the time I thought it was very exotic but it did take the UK a good few years to get on the bandwagon.

You cannot beat a classic jammy dodger: crunchy on the outside, soft and gooey in the middle; perfection in a biscuit-based snack.
