Novel set in Ipswich in 1946, Hodgkinson’s debut work movingly depicts how people try to return to normal life after a dreadful expereince. Janusz, a Polish soldier who spent the war apart from his wife and child, has set up home at 22 Britannia Road, Ipswich. His family is on its way over from Poland, bu arriving at No. 22, his wife feels like an “interloper”: her exposure to wartime atrocities has left a “block of coldness” inside her. the Author writes with a stilted charm that perfectly conveys the family’s inability to build bridges between the chasms of experience that divide them. Lucy Scholes.
