The Larkins (of The Darling Buds of May – this is the sequel) decide to take a family holiday in Brittany. It is fair to say there is more than a bit of a culture clash, and as usual Pop’s behaviour would be highly unacceptable now (and probably was even in 1959 when the book first appeared). But of course everything eventually turns out well in this entertaining story, and Bates’s descriptions of a small, run-down, French seaside hotel and its staff are spot on.
