The Isle of Wight is the most unlikely place for gang warfare but when Victor Green falls from a tree he lands on Tommy Hewson, gangster, known in the underworlds as Gruesome. Members of Tommy’s gang, the Pretty Boys assume that he has been ‘taken out’ by their rivals the Blues Brothers and seek revenge. Unfortunately for Victor, the local newspaper misprints his name, calling him Vincent Green, the name adopted by international hit man Vincenzo Verdi. Victor takes in Gruesome’s poodle dog, “Fluffy” and the pair are seen in the vicinity of several other unfortunate accidents to both sets of gang members. To his surprise, Victor receives several very large cheques for jobs well done, although he has no idea what they are. In the ensuing weeks, Victor’s life is turned upside down as he experiences love, in the form of Verity, the local constable’s and leaves behind him a trail of dead bodies, climaxing in a shoot out at the Congregational Church.

Lead Review

An entertaining murder mystery, there is quite some humour, an easy read for those long summer days.
