This is Joseph Conrad’s first novel and it sets the style that he adopts throughout his literary life. He describes the unravelling of flawed characters against a backdrop of dramatic proportions.  Conrad’s powers of description are remarkable with the crisis in the lives of the main characters being accompanied by a tropical rain storm of frightening ferocity.  The story centres around the broken dreams of Almayer, a Dutch trader in a riverside settlement in western Borneo, His business partner, Captain Lingard, has disappeared, and the business has foundered with the arrival on the scene of an Arab trader.
