Hugo is the child in this book, set in the early 1940s. The Jews of Chernivtsi have been concentrated in a ghetto and some, including Hugo’s father, have been deported to labour camps. Hugo’s Mother – in order to save his life – finds a hiding place for him in a brothel, with a school friend and prostitute, Mariana. He has to hide in an unheated closet whilst she carries on her business. The friendship between the two grows against the horrific background of the Holocaust.
