Police procedural set in LIVERPOOL

10th June 2026

Liar LiarPolice procedural set in LIVERPOOL by Luca Veste, police procedural set in LIVERPOOL

Liar Liar by Luca Veste is the first in a new series of police procedural novels set in Liverpool. It is the author’s stated intention to showcase his beloved city. As is typical of the ‘noir’ genre, this book describes the grittier side of the city, though the main tourist attractions also rate a mention. In fact you could almost track the route that the main characters take through the city on a map, if you were so inclined!

Detective Sergeant Mark Fletcher has just cracked a big case, to great public acclaim. When the chance comes, soon after, to bring down Liverpool’s most notorious crime family, he knows he shouldn’t get involved. But the temptation is too great. Sophia Bonucci, daughter of crime boss Salvo, looks to Mark for help and he knows he should report to his boss, but he wants to be a hero and save her. It’s a terrible error of judgement and his bosses have no choice but to suspend Mark, under investigation. The next time we see Mark is nine months later. He is lying on a bed with a dead body next to him and no idea how either of them came to be there.

This is an involving novel that kept me turning the pages and surprised me with several swift changes of direction, including an ending that I was unprepared for. The characters are likeable and the strength of the bond between them is truly tested.

It seems to me that some of the characters might also have featured in Veste’s previous books, so if you like this one, there are more out there.
