After a failed love affair, Jason Webster heads for Spain, the country that has long enthralled him. He is looking for “Duende”, the state during Flamenco that is part ecstasy, part melancholy, the essence of Spain’s signature art form. He takes up the Flamenco Guitar, studies until his fingers are raw, and becomes involved with Lola, an older dancer who is married to the capricious Vicente. He flees Alicante and ends up in Madrid, overcome by sadness, but it is here that he meets the Gypsies who embody the art of Duende. He becomes immersed in the life, delving deeper where drugs and crime creep in. Webster moves on to Granada where he reflects on his experiences.
