GREEK LETTERS Vol 3 THE EYES HAVE IT

GREEK LETTERS Vol 3 THE EYES HAVE IT

Author(s): Suzi Stembridge

Location(s): Cheshire, Greece

Genre(s): Fiction, Historical, Romance

Era(s): The first half of 20th century

Samuel Carr’s great grandchild is born on a windy night March 1906. The first part of the story is her heartwarming tale of growing up in a newly built semi-detached house in Timperley Cheshire, of her early Edwardian childhood leading up to the start of the Great War, her love of her mother, her school days, her love of theatre and aspirations and the conundrum as to why her relatives appear wealthy but their own life-style is modest. Lightening the gloom in the household is the arrival of her Greek cousin Phil from Nafplia, who has had to be told to desist from joining the Greek navy but after a few years he is gone. Her long-suffering mother puts up with her solidly dependable husband but Helene is to rebel and leave the parental home to travel to India, but she jumps ship at Port Said and ends up Athens where another ‘wild’ relative who has survived the horror at Smyrna encourages her to seek out her cousin Phil in Northern Greece. A full blown adventure in the mountains of Thessaly, with a brigand and a bear around and eventual romance in Pelion. Yet, the second world war threatens and Helene’s life takes quite a different turn.
