The Kid is a young man who is a sex offender. He is befriended by a Professor from the local University who is studying homelessness amongst sex offenders. The Kid has been released from prison but is still on 10 years parole – and through that has to wear a tracking device, and is banned from moving away of Calousa county yet is prohibitied from living within 2500 feet of any school, playground etc. This means he has only three options open to him: under the causeway, out in the swamp or at the international airport where police can arrest people for vagrancy. A truly morally challenging and difficult theme to explore in a novel.

‘Banks is one of those precious writers like Twain or Salinger who creates a voice so wonderfully real that the experience of reading them is like a conversation with an old friend’ (Sunday Times)
