Thrilling novel set in WW1 LONDON

The Deadly Inheritance of Everest MacDonald by A J West, thrilling novel with WW1 as a backdrop – LONDON.

This story is based on true events and it is wonderful to be transported back in time and place in the capable hands of this author.

In December 1897 renowned actor, William Terriss, was stabbed to death outside the Adelphi Theatre in the West End of London. He was known for his swashbuckling and classical roles and was revered for his stage skills. His ghost is thought to haunt the theatre to this day. It would seem that he was killed by fellow actor Richard Prince, who bore a tremendous grudge, fuelled by jealousy. What an interesting premise for a novel!

Everest MacDonald is Terriss’ niece and as she attends her father’s deathbed, he asks her to establish and verify the circumstances of his brother’s murder. Everest is a plucky, sassy soul who is certainly up for the task and goes to visit Prince, which, of course is a salutary experience given where he is residing.

There are wonderful encounters with characters, musings and machinations, the backdrop of the Great War, all making for an interesting and quite flamboyant read.

This is a well written novel that is so transportive of time and place, feeding in cuttings and diary entries that make the narrative really come alive. It is constructed with wit and insight and there is a good sense of tension that really keeps the reader involved, with a nicely formed ending!

A very good read.
