The body of the owner of the largest antique book store in Prague is found next to the Old-New Synagogue. Former dissident and current police officer, Inspector Jan Mazal is on the case. The investigation unfolds against the backdrop of the discovery or forgery of a fourth novel by Kafka and the Prague literary world. Mazal meets the Rabbi of Prague, members of a mysterious Hasidic sect, Czech diplomats and eccentric scholars. He has to deal with a former Communist boss and a suicidal father who survived the Holocaust and the Stalinist show trials. The resolution of the mystery is truly Kafkaesque.
