Set in two time periods – the current day story of historical researcher, Elizabeth Staveley who finds a fragment of a manuscript in the Bodleian Library, suggesting that Celia, an English girl, may have been ship-wrecked at the end of the sixteenth century and then sold into the harem of Sultan Mehmet III of Constantinople. The novel tracks a couple of in Celia’s life in 1599.
Part of Elizabeth’s evidence is that Celia had a suitor, Paul Pindar, who searched for her at the Court of the Ottoman Empire and she tries to find out if he succeeded in finding her.
