The Mended Circle traces several generations born of Philo Marie Sonnier, a deranged and brutal Confederate soldier, and an unknown black woman. “Moonlight and The Farmer” -“Josephine Carried By Her Lord” -“Biddie Meets Miss Alice Paul” are just a few of the chapters.
Chapter one description” “Moonlight and The Farmer” – Moonlight is Josephine’s grandchild, whom she never meets except for a glance at a dirty blanket wrapped around the baby. Moonlight is light-skinned and takes advantage of the breakup of the plantation system after the Civil War. She marries a wealthy white landowner, (the son of the plantation owner upon whose land she grew up a slave orphan) starts a school for young children, and writes the first primer for children of former slaves.
