Set in modern-day Japan, the story follows Rinko, who is a young woman who finds herself penniless when her boyfriend clears their flat of all of her possessions. She has nowhere to go so she decides to return to her home village on the bus. She left her village several years ago when she was on 15 years old, to escape her domineering mother.
Here, she is once again confronted by her angry mother and very angry pet pig. Rinko decides to open a restaurant, Katatsumuri, the magic restaurant whose delicate food can heal any heartache and help its customers find love again. She caters for only one couple per day.
