The Season A Novel

The Season A Novel

Author(s): Liam Concannon

Location(s): Catalonia

Genre(s): LGBTQIA+

Era(s): Present

When Finbar O’Sullivan arrives in Calamendrera with his partner Lance to celebrate his thirty-fifth birthday, he has the perfect life. Yet he begins to realise it has been a life lived without adventure. Fin makes up his mind to change this by staying in Spain, except Lance is an ambitious high flyer with no intention of giving up his career.

One afternoon while out walking along the beach, Fin bumps into Julian, with whom he had a fling years before. Then, during a later meeting, Julian invites him and Lance to a dinner party, where Fin is introduced to the handsome Estéban Vilaró Figueres, a Catalan politician passionate about his people.

When Fin starts to have doubts about his decision, Estéban takes him to meet Miss Bridget, who arrived in Calamendrera in the mid 1940s, sent by a convent in Galway as tutor to the Vilaró Figueres family. Miss Bridget tells Fin her story, recalling the courage it took to leave her family and fiancé to begin a new adventure.

Soon after Fin’s birthday, Lance discovers Fin cheated on him with Julian. Bewildered at the deceit and angry, he returns to London claiming his boss needs him back urgently.

Left alone and drawn together by a love of Catalan art and architecture, and as their friendship deepens, Fin and Estéban embark upon an intense affair.

The Season is a story of divided loyalties in a divided country where nothing is as it first appears.
