A coming-of-age novel set in NORTHERN IRELAND
Twelve Camels For Your Wife
Location(s): Türkiye (Turkey)
Genre(s): Nonfiction, Humour
Era(s): Covers a period from 1972 to the present day
In 1972 three Oxford graduates embarked on a trip around the world. For one of them it sparked a lifelong love affair with one country, Turkey. After many years holidaying there George Dearsley and his wife Carolyn moved to Turkey permanently, took in two rescue dogs and renovated two houses in a traditional village. His memoir details the often funny and sometimes crazy incidents that kept drawing him back. They include being arrested as a spy during the 1974 war with Greece over Cyprus, watching a man swallow a snake, judging a beauty contest, being given a front row seat at a circumcision and seeing Turkey’s most famous criminal crash a sea plane.
