Cornwall is a magical, mysterious and breath-takingly beautiful place. I have so many happy memories of holidays in Tintagel, back in the 70’s, with my Mum, Dad, 2 sisters and 2 brothers, and our 2 lovely dogs. So much enchantment, and wonder, such stunning scenery, and all the myths and legends that surrounded us. I loved it so much that I went back with my husband and son and daughter, and we spent many happy, carefree and never-to-be-forgotten days making wonderful memories. I love the place, the people, the food, the Scrumpy cider, the fairy-tale quality that surrounds the scenery, and the other-world atmosphere.
You have to read Daphne du Maurier if you want a flavour of Cornwall! Frenchman’s Creek, Rebecca, Jamaica Inn are all set near/around Fowey.
I come from Cornwall but now live across the border in Devon, so love books that are based there. At the weekend visited Charlestown a location in the Poldark series based on the Winston Graham books.
We love Cornwall! Our favourite place is Land’s End – so peaceful and tranquil and the scenery is amazing. I love a Scone the cornish way! Spread with strawberry jam first and then lots of clotted cream along with a lovely pot of Cornish Tea Smugglers Brew!
Never been, but had childhood holidays in Devon and would love to visit Cornwall to try a real cream tea!
I have always loved Cornwall – st Ives, the eden project it feels like home.
Cornish pasties, sea & magnificent scenery come to mind.
Last time I was in Cornwall I was about 12! Not saying how old I am now but it was a long time ago! I just remember I loved that holiday in the touring van with my parents and younger brother. We will go again soon as I want to take my husband now he has retired but we live at the other end of the country so not a little journey to start with.
Never been there, but judging by the comments I’m reading here – I should put it on my bucket list ASAP! Thanks so much for the chance!
A perfect day in Cornwall would be the following.
A visit to the Eden project , then a Cornish pasty for lunch . An evening sing song with The Fishermen’s Friends and an evening meal at Rick Steins ! My day would end with a good book, preferably one set in Cornwall !
What’s not to like about Cornwall ?
Love visiting Cornwall and first visited after reading the Poldark books many years ago. I love the variety of places from The Lost Gardens of Heligan to St. Michael’s Mount.
There’s nothing better than reading a novel set in Cornwall when I can’t visit
I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never been to Cornwall, although I’ve lived all my life on the South Coast & have visited 5 continents.
I immediately think of Cornish Clotted Cream, (which luckily I can buy in my local supermarkets)….Food of the Gods!
I’d love to win books by the authors C.A. and L.F. (Not giving too much away.)
I’ve never been to Cornwall, been as far as Devon as my friend used to live there, always reminded me of a little English France. When I think of Cornwall I picture a house on a cliff overlooking the beach, gorging on a cream tea and reading Rosemunde Pilcher..idealic..x
Just love Cornwall. Ice cream, pasties and mead. Now that is a good meal. Rosamunde Pilcher books and a nice quiet cove to consume and read the above!
I love living in Cornwall! Excellent pasties at our local butchers Peter Morris in St Columb Major. Just been for an early morning swim at the Retallack resort! Home to walk with our dog Maisie, hang out the washing and drive to Trebah to enjoy the gorgeous hydrangeas. Bliss!!
Never been to Cornwall…nice to go there in my imagination with a good book.
If I think of books set in Cornwall it has to be the Poldark novels!
There are so many wonderful books set in cornwall.
A few I remember reading are Rebecca and the shell seekers and the forgotten Garden.
Have many happy memories of holidaying in beautiful Praa Sands in Cornwall. As a young couple we used to camp but when our son was born we progressed to the lovely Praa Sands Hotel ( now a private house again) where the dining room looked out over the beach …it was glorious. Happy memories of visits to St Ives, St Michaels Mount and the Minnack theatre . Such an evocative place x
First thing that springs to mind is Cornish pasties. I love the beaches and the countryside and how different the North and South are. St Ives is one of my favourite places, best to visit when out of season. My current read is Her Mother’s Secret by Rosanna Ley which is in parts set in Cornwall. So many books are Cornish based, one of my favourites is the Poldark series by Winston Graham.
I fell in love with Cornwall for the first time when I read The Shell Seekers. I live in the USA and I definitely want to go to Cornwall.
Cornwall has long been on my list of places I want to visit. Some of the earliest adult books I read as a young teen, were those by Victoria Holt. The Mistress of Mellyn took place in Cornwall.
I yearn to visit! I know a little about the Arthur legends of Tintagel, a little of the smuggling history from Poldark, and a whole bunch of romance smattered from summer flings! (Not mine, but read) I’d love to read one and get a firm focus for a next trip! 🙂

I remember doing bed and breakfast round Devon and Cornwall when I was a child. Mean to go back again one day!
I am half Cornish (on my mother’s side) & I have a brother who lives in Cornwall, who I visit twice a year, so I am coming to know Cornwall a bit better, Londoner though I am!
One of my favourite places is Trevaunance Cove in St Agnes, where I go to watch the surfers do their stuff!
Before I became diabetic, I used to enjoy a Cornish pasty or two & a Cornish Cream Tea (jam first, cream on top!)
I try to avoid visiting Cornwall in the school summer holidays, as many roads become gridlocked with “emmets”, (meaning ‘ants’ -Cornish term for tourists!)
Out of season, Cornwall is quieter & more peaceful, a very relaxing place to visit.
As to the weather, well, you might strike lucky & have glorious sunshine in March, or you might have high winds & horizontal rain in September…it’s luck of the draw!
My favourite place is fowey recommended to me years ago my a local librarian who had it as her second home. If ever I here anything about fowey it always reminds me of her
We had a wonderful family holiday years ago based in Marazion right opposite St Michael’s Mount. An old school friend on my mum lived in Newlyn and she and her husband took us (2 adults +4 kids) in two cars to many wonderful places. Best holiday I’ve had.
I loved taking family holidays in Cornwall over49 years ago would love to revisit
I’ve never been, but look forward to traveling there in books!
Poldark. Cream Teas. Perranporth beach. Crazy golf at Holywell Bay. Wandering around St Ives, just taking it all in. Lizard Point, end of the world, when I was young.
Oh to be in Cornwall, what a fabulous county.
My husband and I have had a holiday in Cornwall many, many times, in fact we are having a holiday at Mother Ivey’s Bay this September. We absolutely love Cornwall. It feels like we are going home each time we visit. We have stayed at wonderful places all over Cornwall with beautiful beaches, lovely coastal walks and clean fresh air.
Hello, I have been to the Minack open air theatre in Cornwall which has an amazing setting overlooking the sea. I would recommend visiting that if you are in Cornwall.
I love Cornwall for the wonderful scenery and the magical myths and legends that abound there.
Cornwall, is my favourite county, Fav spot St Nectan
Glen near Tintagel, follow the path, past the ruined Abbey, and the fishery, down to the cliff top overlooking the sea, meditate as St Nectan did, feel his ghost as we did, he walked that path twice a day, to pray. visit Tintagel beach, and see the cave where Merlin entered, never to come out, but legend has it a black Raven flew out the castle ruins, not worth the money or climb, then have a real Cornish pasty, from the bakers.
As my husband is Cornish, I’ve visited the county a lot over the years, but almost always as a family visitor rather than a tourist so there are a lot of touristy things I’ve missed out on. It’s always been a case of heading down the A30 and not pausing for breath until we reached Penzance. So most of my exploration of the county has been done through the pages of fiction.
For me, the Isles of Scilly sum up all that is wonderful about Cornwall – fabulous scenery, the cleanest of beaches, the freshest of air, great food, friendly folk.
Cornish pasties, yum yum!
We live on the Devon/Cornwall border and love where we are. In fact we are staying in a holiday cottage in Marazion this week and we just spent today in Porthleven, my favourite place. Fish and chips and clotted cream ice cream on the harbour in the beautiful sunshine. Heaven x
Well I love a cream tea but is it jam then cream or the other way round? I know which I prefer!
Penny-Sue, it’s jam first then cream if you are Cornish, the other way round for Devonians!
Ooh, Catherine Alliott and Liz Fenwick, brilliant authors! Apart from the obvious clotted cream, I think of the novel In Her Wake by Amanda Jennings and the many other wonderful novels in which Cornwall is brought to life!
