GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of New Girl in Little Cove set in Newfoundland and Labrador

28th February 2022

We are delighted to offer 3 copies of New Girl in Little Cove by Damhnait Monaghan, novel set in NEWFOUNDLAND and LABRADOR.

“A charming, romantic, and often comic tale of falling in love with people and a place

New Girl in Little Cove

When a new teacher arrives in a tiny fishing village, she realises the most important lessons are the ones she learns outside the classroom.

It’s 1985. Rachel O’Brien arrives in Little Cove, Newfoundland seeking a fresh start after her father dies and her relationship ends. As a new teacher at the local Catholic high school, Rachel chafes against the small community, where everyone seems to know her business. The anonymous notes that keep appearing on her car, telling her to go home, don’t make her feel welcome either.

Still, Rachel is quickly drawn into the island’s distinctive music and culture, as well as the lives of her students and fellow teacher, Doug Bishop. As Rachel begins to bond with her students, her feelings for Doug also begin to grow. Rachel tries to ignore her emotions because Doug is in a long-distance relationship with his high school sweetheart. Or is he?

Eventually, Rachel’s beliefs clash with church and community, and she makes a decision that throws her career into jeopardy. In trying to help a student, has she gone too far? Only the intervention of the ‘Holy Dusters’, local women who hook rugs and clean the church, can salvage Rachel’s job as well as her chance at a future with Doug.

Currently reading Fallen Skies by Philippa Gregory. Set just after the first world war while people are trying to get back to their previous lives and are beginning to acknowledge that nothing will be the same again. Big on setting- the normality of the setting (Portsmouth) is used juxtaposed with the horrors of the war that are still fresh in the minds of the characters. I would recommend- it’s a fantastic look at the expectations of society at the time, and is an eye opener into the fact that mental health issues just weren’t acknowledged then.

I am reading Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. I am thoroughly enjoying it! It’s lovely to read a classic novel. The writing is beautiful but challenging at times – I’m having to Google a lot of words! But the story is passionate with a female anti-hero that you grow to connect with as the story gets near the end. I would definitely recommend.

I am currently reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Although it won the Pulitzer back in 2014 I’ve only just got round to it. Loving every sentence. Set during the years of WWII and telling the story of Marie-Laure a young blind French girl and Werner Pfennig a German orphan boy. An incredible story with beautiful vivid descriptions. I would recommend it to everyone.

I’ve just started reading Coming Home to Brightwater Bay by Holly Hepburn. It follows a romance writer, Merina, who is suffering from writers block. To escape, she takes up a writer in residence post in the Orkney Islands and already I want to visit! The description of the clifftop cottage where she is staying sounds idyllic. So far, I’d definitely recommend it!

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney.

Loved the title but my inner pedant wanted to see a question mark on that cover. There were also some issues with punctuation (lack of) as I began reading, which I found distracting.

I’ve set the book aside for now as I can’t get into it. However, I see that many people have rated it highly so perhaps I am missing something. It’s always worth trying again and persevering when the author is as talented as sally Rooney.

I am currently reading ‘The Turn Of The Tide’ the final part of an outstanding WWII series – ‘The Sturmtaucher Trilogy’ by author Alan Jones.

At over 2,500 pages total, this series will have been a chunkster read, but a real labour of love.

The action has moved on from Kiel in Germany, to British POW camps in Scotland and detention centres on the IoM and covers in detail the destruction and annihilation of the Jewish and other minority races and groups, from immediately post Hitler’s formation of the National Socialist Party, to liberation and the end of the war.

The research and attention to detail is superb and I still have no clear inkling as to the final outcome.

The series, which I wish I had been able to read as back to back stories, although previous commitments made that impossible, has taken the author 5 years to complete and would I recommend it – You bet!!

My favourite tv series is filmed and set in Newfoundland, but I haven’t seen a book set there before. I’m currently reading Rachel Hore’s A Beautiful Spy, about a young woman sent undercover to spy on the up and coming Communist party in England. In the early 1930’s this type of work was considered very daring for a female. Esp[ecially the part I’ve just reached where she’s travelling-unaccompanied- to Bombay. I can’t wait to carry on reading tonight.
