Fiction set in USA and EUROPE: the life of Maria Callas
GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of The Art of Traveling Strangers set across Italy and in Paris
25th June 2023
We are delighted to offer 3 copies of The Art of Traveling Strangers by Zoe Disigny, set across Italy and in Paris.
Open to UK/EU entries
It’s the 1980s, and art historian Claire Markham reels from a series of heartbreaking losses. Desperate to escape her shattered reality, she becomes an art guide in Europe for quirky stranger Viv Chancey and embarks on a life-changing journey through the art-filled cities of Milan, Venice, Ravenna, Florence, Siena, Rome, and Paris.
Once abroad, Claire tries to hide her woes by focusing on Viv’s art education, but Viv—who is not who she seems—has a different learning experience in mind. Frustrated and wanting to reimagine her life, Claire embraces the idea of reality as illusion and finds herself slipping into the tales of art and history.
When threatened with one more crushing loss, Claire must learn from the spirit of her eccentric companion and the lessons from the art they encounter to take charge of her life or lose the most precious thing in it.
The Art of Traveling Strangers is a journey of self-discovery and personal empowerment inspired by the great art masterpieces of Italy and France. It’s a tale of female bonding and the amazing powers of perception. After all, reality, like art, is just an illusion.

It’s a gift to enjoy your own company. Travel on!
Stephen Fry for some intellectual conversation.
Sandi Toksvig. Funny, great company, full of stories but doesn’t monopolise the conversation. And wants to see the side of places that other people don’t see.

Clare
Mark Steyn. Intelligent, informed, opinionated and funny. Great company on any trip.
Sir Alex Ferguson
I was going to say my cat as he’s good company and I always miss him when I travel but I don’t think he would make a great travel companion as he would be constantly trying to escape so I will instead say my mum! To be honest, it’s not so much a case of who I would want to travel with but who would want to travel with me!

Yeah, too bad cats don’t travel well. They are such a comfort, like bringing a bit of home on a trip with you.
I think Sandi Toksvig would be an entertaining, well-informed and fun travelling companion.
I’d travel with my husband who enjoys and appreciates art and culture as much as me.
Sarah Millican would be lovely company and we could eat lots of cake!
Miriam Margoyles OBE – Would be more than a laugh a minute with high anticipation of what she would come out with next

I have a friend I love to travel with too. We are both art historians, which makes us really compatible when it comes to choosing where to go and what to see.
I have been travelling with my husband for 50 years (married for 47) We both retire this year and will be able to travel when we want, which will be marvellous as we are great companions. It is to be hoped that money and health allow us to continue!

Good luck to you and your husband. Traveling is the best retirement gift!
My best friend, Pauline, who I’ve known since day 1 at primary school – over 73 years ago!
My husband and I are definitely on the same wavelength, well after forty four years, we need to be really!
If I was on a trip of a lifetime, I would want to know that there wasn’t going to be a lot of potential for falling out or disagreeing. Travelling with someone new, as much as you might think you know them and are on the same wavelength, is potentially fraught with complications 🙂

You’re so right. Traveling with someone new can be a big challenge. But it’s a surefire way to discover how compatible you are . . . or not.

I would love to travel with my friend Sue. We met on a bus in Canada in the 90’s and though we see each other infrequently, (living in different places) each occasion we do meet up it is like no time has passed at all. We always have many a laugh.

How lovely is that!!
There’s nobody I’d rather travel with than my husband. I’m happier travelling alone than with anyone else
My husband and I did a trip to France with a group of friends which the last night was due to be in Paris. When we got to the hotel there had been a mix up with bedrooms, one with three in a room. I ended up with two female friends in one room and he shared a double bed with his mate. No romantic Paris for us

Ha! Maybe next time.
My daughter as we are on the same wavelength
