GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of The Storyteller by The Sea – DEVON

10th September 2023

We are delighted to offer 3 copies of The Storyteller by The Sea by Phyllida Shrimpton set in DEVON

UK ONLY

3 copies of The Storyteller by The Sea

A heartwarming and uplifting new novel, perfect story for fans of Sally Page and Hazel Prior.

Melody spends her days scouring the Devon shore for treasures washed up by the sea or left behind in the sand by people who come to her beach. She takes them back to Spindrift, her weathered old house set in a crescent of equally weathered old houses on the edge of a little Devonshire bay. She places her treasures on her brother Milo’s bed at the end of each day and weaves beautiful and fanciful stories for him about how they came to be.

Everything Melody could ever need is right where she is, cupped by the rocks that shape her bay, whispering through the salty air and chiming from the sea.

Except all is not as it seems. The house of stories is under threat from developers, looking to modernise the strip of coast on which the old house stands. With the help of her estranged cousin, can Melody save the old house and change her world for the better?

  1. You need to be a member of TripFiction. Simply go to tripfiction.com and scroll down to the JOIN NOW tab. And we do check!
  2. Tell us in the COMMENTS BELOW: DEVON is well known for its cream teas (including a scone piled high with clotted cream and jam). Let us have your thoughts on the age-old debate – SHOULD THE JAM OR THE CLOTTED CREAM GO ON THE SCONE FIRST? (it’s a very British question, but do feel free to join in, even if you have no strong views!)  Do this  by Saturday, 23rd September 2023. The first three names chosen at random will be sent a copy each of the book. UK ONLY.

Personally I don’t mind either way. I don’t like clotted cream and although I love jam I would never have it on a scone. Always butter, straight from the fridge and preferably one one of hubby’s delicious home made scones.

Jam first, then cream on the top. I’ve always done it that way because it stays put better. The jam is a bit more of a solid base to put the cream onto.

Well as we are talking about a Devonshire cream tea, the order would be clotted cream first and then the jam. Across the border in Cornwall they’d disagree. But it makes sense to me. Don’t we butter toast before putting the jam. So it’s reasonable to put the clotted cream first!

I generally tend to go with the Devon rule of cream first, then jam.

It’s not that I have any real preference taste wise, but simply that if you put the jam on first, then the cream slides around all over the top and you can’t spread it.

A good clotted cream base spread over the scone, then means that you can put on a good old dollop of jam and tuck in!

With regards to whether the jam or the clotted cream should go on first, I would probably say the jam but as I don’t have either on my scones, I don’t feel qualified to comment!
