The Burnings by Julian Lees: With discovery comes certain death…
When Australian Jillian Parker’s scorched remains are discovered in her burnt-out car Ruud Pujasumarta and his team are brought in to investigate what appears at first to be a routine homicide. But when Canadian citizen Anita Dalloway’s charred body is found a few days later Ruud finds a banner unfurled by the corpse’s feet. A verse from the Quran is scribbled across it, calling for unbelievers to be burned. The killer is targeting Christians. And the team’s suspicions are confirmed when a third body, that of English backpacker Emily Grealish, turns up with the same M.O.
But who is responsible? Is it the senior Australian diplomat from the embassy who was obsessed by the first victim? The Imam who preaches Sharia law? The Indonesian three-star military general taking backhanders and living a life of luxury in Jakarta? Or the local drug dealer with a score to settle? But Ruud is suspicious that the killer may be someone much closer to home, someone Ruud has trusted for many years. What unravels is a terrifying chain of events for Ruud. And what he discovers puts his and those around him lives in danger.

I would love to visit Bali one day. We did the Thailand thing about 10 years ago and loved that. Such friendly people and so relaxing. I imagine island life to be even more so!
I visited Indonesia in 1991, and would love to go back. Such fond memories and everything was so cheap. I remember staying in a bungalow in Ubud on Bali, and it costthe equivalent of just 75p per night, and that included breakfast! Another time I got a full body massage which lasted a whole hour and cost just £1. Bali was memorable for so many things; the friendly and beautiful people, the amazing food, wonderful puppet theatre, amazing temples……
I would love to visit Bali, sunshine, golden beaches and learning about their culture. I would love to go travelling. Fingers crossed, liked and shared original post
I would love to visit for the history of the country. It has so much passion and history it would be amazing for me to see
Bali has always been on my bucket list but the hubby isn’t a very good flier :/ I’m hoping that one day I can convince him to go but for now Google will have to do!
Spent a wonderful Christmas in Ubud one year – loved the weather, the food and the people. I’ve never read a thriller set in Jakarta – I’d love to win a copy and learn more about this fascinating country. Thanks for the chance to enter.
Bali will now be added to my ever lengthening list of places to visit!
Never been , nor eaten the food! Would love to try out the weather though!!!!
Had a wonderful trip to Bali many years ago. We stayed in Nusa Dua, beautiful area. The people were friendly, food tasty. Overall highly recommended. Would love to go back some day!
Never considered visiting Bali much prefer to read about foreign places
Having visited Thailand and Malaysia, Indonesia was next on my list but never did get to visit. Now I can visit vicariously through your book.
After reading this my bucket list got longer!
I would love to travel to Indonesia, relax on a beach, try their wonderful fragrant cuisine and sample some of their spa treatments made with frangipani and coconut oil. I would also like to learn more about their culture and visit some of their beautiful temples. A perfect destination.
I have had this book on my wish list for months so would love to finally get a copy to read.
I’d love to visit for the peace, quiet and beautiful beaches. One day…..
I’ve never visited Indonesia although I have lived and travelled a lot in the Far East, and for several months lived in Brunei which is an independent state on the island of Borneo, most of which is taken up by the Indonesian state of Kalimantan. So I’ve been pretty darned close, and out of all the foods I enjoyed in South East Asia, Indonesian is by far my favourite. I cook it a lot, having been taught by Indonesian friends, and dream one day of enjoying it in its own country.
I would love to go to Bali it sounds so lovely and as foodie this really appeals to me
I travelled through Java & Bali in the early 1980s! I remember even then how teeming Jakarta was & choked with fumes from the stop-start traffic!
I preferred to be further South, visiting temples, listening to Gamelan orchestras, watching wayang kulit puppet shows & religious dance performances!
Then in Bali it was more about the beaches, enjoying massage from old ladies wrapped in 3 layers of dark clothing but also travelling around the beautiful countryside!
Unfortunately my travel companion got Dengue Fever while we were in Bali, but understandably didn’t want to be hospitalised there, so I had to support her to get her on the long coach journey from Bali back to Jakarta & then on a flight to Singapore, where she felt comfortable to be hospitalised!
Even now, if she smells the traditional Indonesian cigarettes (Kretek) she feels a wave of nausea!
