Many visits and many memories and I still love it and want to keep exploring and discovering more. I have read lots of Venice books and used to like Donna Leon books the most but the more recent Philip Gwynne Jones books are a fresh and authentic addition to the genre. Venice food books great too

I’ve tried 3 times to type my favourite place to eat in Cannareggio. But I can’t give it away! It’s beyond me. Sorry. It would spoil it if too many people went there. It’s better to find it by accident as I did.

I visited Venice for the first time this spring, on an Interrail circuit of Europe. I was worried that it would be a disappointment (Prague had been a little disappointing; Vienna, very much so), but it was wonderful.

I spent an afternoon getting delightfully lost, and ended up sitting on the quayside watching the boats go by.

I’m also smitten with Venice’s charms, and will soon leave for my third trip. I’ve been on a casual guided trip, then to Carnevale, and this time just to wander in amazement at the beauty of this historic city.
Try to go to Il Ballo del Doge!
I’m enjoying Gregory Dowling’s historical fiction series set in 1749 Venice: “Ascension” and “Four Horsemen.”

5am There is nobody in St Mark’s Square but me, with camera and tripod, watching until dawn and people arrive from the Laguna. The first is a man with a brush and a cart, the word ‘Power’ graffitoed on it. Dawn takes away my power and I slink back to the hotel but when I check my photos, I have captured something that will stay with me, a whiff of the Veneto.

Visited Venice many years ago – my friend’s foot was run over by a Coca Cola cart and even though she had insurance, the hospital would not let her in until we found sufficient cash to pay for her treatment. So, she ended up sitting outside the hospital doors with a bleeding foot whilst we got the money together!

Venice is a living postcard dedicated to preserving the past in all its glory. A floating dream I’ve been fortunate enough to visit a few times. My best advice is to take a day, lose your guidebook & just get lost wandering the streets & canals. There are hidden gems everywhere not listed in guidebooks, beauty around every corner. I can’t wait to return ❤❤
