Novel set mainly in ABRUZZO
GIVEAWAY …. Novel set in Malaysia!
28th July 2019
Do you fancy reading The Concubine’s Child by Carol Jones, a novel set in beautiful Malaysia? It’s a great book…
In 1930s Malaya a sixteen-year-old girl, dreaming of marriage to her sweetheart, is sold as a concubine to a rich old man desperate for an heir. Trapped, and bullied by his spiteful wife, Yu Lan plans to escape with her babyson, despite knowing that they will pursue her to the ends of the earth.
Four generations later, her great-grandson, Nick, will return to Malaysia, looking for the truth behind the facade of a house cursed by the unhappy past. Nothing can prepare him for what he will find.
This exquisitely rich novel brings to life a vanished world – a world of abandoned ghost houses, inquisitive monkeys, smoky temples and a panoply of gods and demons. A world where a poor girl can be sold to fulfil a rich man’s dream. But though he can buy her body, he can never capture her soul, nor quench her spirit.

I’m a city girl so would love to stroll around Kuala Lumpur to see old and new neighbourhoods and architecture.
I would just love to see the stunning and unique architecture in Malacca.
I would love to visit Singapore. My father lived there when it fell in the Second World War and I have always wanted to see it
the Cameron Highlands
I lived in Singapore as a child and visited Malaysia several times. I esepcially enjoyed the Butterfly Garden in Penang. Some of the butterflies were huge, and all of them were spectacularly beautiful.
I’ve always wanted to visit Kuala Lampur…such a beautiful place
I remember a school friend once went to Kuala Lampur with his family & said it was amazing some 30 something years again.
It would have to be visiting the orang utans in Borneo. They are one of my favourite animals! Having said that, I would just love to visit Malaysia – full stop!

Hello! I have not been to Malaysia but if I went, I would visit the Petronas Towers aas they look amazing.
Orang-utans in Borneo
I have always fancied Kuala Lumpur as a cousin of mine worked there, and his tales have always made me want to visit
we have always wanted to see / visit orang utans in their natural habitat
Never been but a friend has and said Penang was incredible for the street food and the street murals were incredible. Hope one day to see for myself!
I hope to visit Malaysia one day. As a travel advisor, I booked clients to Borneo. It was a bucket list trip for them. It was like taking a class for me, since I had to research everything, Mt. Kinabalu, Langkawi, and other places. KL does not really interest me. Penang seems more my taste.
Have never been. Would love to see the orangutans!
I have never been but would love to visit Kuala Lumpur – one of the places here top of the list would be to go to the The Perdana Botanical Gardens. And would love to go to the Street Markets and experience the culture and the food. The Concubine’s Child by Carol Jones looks a great book, thank you.
I have visited Malaysia and loved it but haven’t visited Borneo and it is on my wish list Such a beautiful diverse country
Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant, bustling city, however if you need a break from the action I would recommend spending a couple of hours at the KL Bird Park. Spanning 20 acres and housing some 3000 birds this is an oasis of calm which emphasises conservation and the study of birds in their natural habitat.
If I ever get to Malaysia I would hunt out A Botanical Garden as I’m sure whatever they grow would look stunning.
That is one place I haven’t visited yet but would love to do so! The stamps depict lovely beaches, a variety of wildlife and flowers and beautiful coloured costumes.
Love to visit Kuala Lumpur specially to taste the street foods and also to see the Elephant sanctuary at Kuala Gandah
I would love to visit Borneo’s orangutan sanctuary and Petronas towers in Kuala Lumpur, the beautiful beaches and the Colourfulness of Malaysia.
It would be wonderful to see the orang-utans!
I would live to visit Kuala Lampur, even the name conjures up fabulous images
“The food is the best combination of Indonesian, Thai, Indian, and Chinese!” You had me wanting to visit Malaysia right there!!!!
I would love to visit the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur.
I would like to visit Penang in Malaysia
Would love to visit Batu Caves!
I’d love to sit reading in one of the beautiful gardens of Penang. My idea of heaven.
Yes please, I would to read this one. I would walk on the beautiful beaches and try the food. My boyfriend has been and he loved the food and he’s a very fussy eater.
Sarawak, Borneo as I am a big Sandokan fan.
I would really love to visit the luxury resort island of Pangkor Laut in Malaysia. My husband was born in Malaysia and lived there until his teens, and long before it became a resort, his grandparents lived on Pangkor and he used to visit them in his school holidays. We have several paintings of the island, done by his grandfather, around the house. It would be fascinating for my husband to go back there and see how much it has changed. For myself, I love luxury resorts and I love Malaysia – the climate, the plants and wildlife, the food and the people, so I know I would have a wonderful trip.
It’s got to be the beautiful beaches
I would live where I used to live in the early 80s -Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, E. Malaysia!!
Very different from West Malaysia, some West Malaysians would call it ‘ulu’ (jungly), but it is (or was, at least), very relaxed & laid back, with an easy mix of Chinese, Malay, Tamil & local tribes…& the occasional ‘orang puteh’ (white person!)
Although there are many more roads now, some places are still only accessible by river or air.
In the much reduced area of primary rainforest, there are still some orangutan, proboscis monkeys, sun bears etc.
You can still visit longhouses to see how the Ibans live and share a glass of potent ‘tuak’ (rice wine) with them before being asked to dance the ‘najak’ to give everyone a laugh!
Oh, I’ve come over all nostalgic now!
I have never been to Malaysia but I’d love to visit Langkawi, the jewel of Kedah. It looks breathtaking. One book I’d like to read is ‘The Garden Of Evening Mist’, sounds like my kind of book.
Definitely the beach in Penang as I remember enjoying the Alex Garland novel set there years back.
I’d love to be lying on the beaches with some good books x
