2nd June 2025
Giveaway: Three great engaging books set in LONDON (mid 20th Century)
UK ENTRY ONLY
We are delighted to be able to offer a giveaway of three great and engaging books set across different periods in London.
They are A Death in the Afternoon by Julie Anderson, Mrs Spy by M J Robotham, and Murder at St Paul’s Cathedral by Jim Eldridge.
- A Death in the Afternoon. In 1948 London swelters amid post-war reconstruction, while continued rationing and the black-market fuel the rising crime wave. The empires of gangland bosses grow and thrive, protected by corruption and bribery. During a party in Clapham a student nurse from the South London Hospital for Women and Children dies in a fall from a balcony. Is it an unfortunate accident as the local police believe? Or something more sinister?
- Mrs Spy. Maggie Flynn isn’t your typical 1960s mum. She’s a spy, and unsuspecting operative for MI5, stalking London’s streets in myriad disguises. Widowed and balancing her clandestine career with raising a Beatles-mad teenage daughter, Maggie finds comfort and and purpose in her profession – providing a connection to her later husband, whose own covert past only surfaced after his death.
- Murder at St Paul’s Cathedral. May 1941. One of the senior choristers at St Paul’s, Edwin Roberts, is found beaten to death in the crypt of the cathedral and Detective Inspector Coburg and Detective Sergeant Lampson are called in the investigate. The dead man was fare from popular. That, coupled with a small army of staff at work at the famous landmark, including those of the Night Watch striving to protect the Cathedral from the worst of the Blitz means that there is no shortage of suspects.
All three great books, plus a London tea towel designed by Victoria Eggs, a selection of teas, and a small Book Lover greeting card will be sent to the lucky winner!
