When I was flying back from my travels in S.E. Asia, with Aeroflot, we were grounded in Moscow due to them having overbooked the onward flight to London.
As we didn’t have visas (this was in 1983!) we were not allowed to leave the hotel, which was divided into 2 halves by a glass wall, one half for those possessing visas, the other for those without!
We had no hand luggage, not even a toothbrush or spare underwear, so we had to improvise with scrubbing our teeth with salt from the dining room & washing out our underwear in the basin with a bar of soap!
We were held captive for 5 days in all, we were taken every morning at 5am to the airport, & every morning the onward flight was overbooked!
Sensing our growing anger, the airline did treat us to a coach trip around the sights of Moscow but we were not allowed to leave the coach!
On the 5th day we were taken to the airport & yet again there was no room on the onward flight. Finally, we had all had enough & we staged a sit-down strike, refusing to leave the airport! Some very burly female policewomen came to haul us up, but we resisted & the airline realised they had pushed us far enough, so within a few hours we were on a first class flight with BA to Vienna & thence to London!
My hold luggage ended up in Paris….but that’s another story!!
So, I would love to return to Moscow one day & take my time seeing all the sights, not just out of a coach window! 🙂
St Petersberg is on my ‘to see’ list.
I would love to do the Trans-Siberian Express – stopping along the way to explore the length and breadth of this fascinating country. Thanks for the opportunity to enter.
