Hardworking and overworked, Anika is a talented surgeon at a London hospital. It’s been some time since she’s had a decent night’s sleep, let alone a holiday. Not ideal for someone with parasomnia – a rare, often stress-induced, condition that causes sleepwalking blackouts.
When a patient dies on her operating table, important people start asking questions and the media and her colleagues turn against her overnight.
It seems her only respite is to escape on an all-expenses-paid housesitting gig in Sri Lanka and keep a low profile until the drama passes, and the verdict on her case – and career as a surgeon – is decided. But what should be a restorative beach break becomes a trip back into a murky, haunted past, which has been waiting for her all along.

Sigiriya / Lion Rock, amazing UNESCO World Heritage site we visited around 20 years ago, would love to return
I know nothing about Sri Lanka. If it’s warm that would be reason enough.
I don’t know much about Sri Lanka, but am always open to new places and suggestions for the future.
• Sigiriya Rock Fortress
– Ancient palace atop a massive “lion rock,” with frescos and panoramic views.
Tip: Arrive at sunrise to beat the heat and the crowds.
• Temple of the Tooth (Kandy)
– Home to Buddha’s sacred tooth relic.
Tip: Dress modestly (cover shoulders & knees) and visit during the evening “pooja” ceremony for an atmospheric experience.
• Galle Fort
– UNESCO-listed Dutch fort with cobbled streets, boutique shops and ocean views.
Tip: Wander off the main ramparts into the side lanes for hidden cafés and street art.
• Yala National Park
– One of Asia’s best spots for leopards, elephants and crocodiles.
Tip: Book a dawn safari—animals are most active in the cooler morning light.
• Ella & the Hill Country
– Spectacular train ride through tea plantations, plus hikes like Little Adam’s Peak.
Tip: Grab a “second class observation” seat (open windows) on the Kandy→Ella run.
• Mirissa & Whale-Watching Coast
– Blue whales and spinner dolphins frequently spotted offshore.
Tip: Go between November–April, and choose small-group boats to reduce environmental impact.
Additional top tips
• Best season: December–March (west/south coast), April–September (east coast).
• Getting around: Tuk-tuks are fun for short hops; hire a private driver or take trains for longer journeys.
• Currency & connectivity: ATMs are widespread in towns; pick up a local SIM for cheap data.
• Food to try: Hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes), kottu roti, pol sambol and fresh tropical fruit.
• Health & safety: Use strong mosquito repellent at dusk, drink bottled water, and negotiate tuk-tuk fares up front.
I would love to climb Little Adam’s Peak as I’ve heard the views from the top are amazing.
I have never had the chance to visit Sri Lanka, but for the photographs I have seen, I would like to see Sigiriya.
Galle looks wonderful for the architecture in the old city, the temple and the wonderful views, and I’d love to see the leopards in Yala National Park.
I’ve never been to Sri Lanka but do collect stamps and they are really beautiful – the wildlife, especially the elephants, flowers and sights look really great. I’ve heard the food is good too!

I heard a top tip – To use a tuk-tuk app like PickMe in cities for fairer prices.
I’d like to see some of Sri Lanka’s wildlife so I’d be keen to go on a safari through one of the national parks. I’ve heard Yala National Park is a good place to go if you want to see leopards.
