Memoir set in MÁLAGA
Police procedural thriller set on LONG ISLAND
27th June 2025
Shatter Creek by Rod Reynolds, police procedural thriller set on Long Island. The actual location is fictional Rockport.
Hampstead County Police Department in Rockport is in crisis. Corruption at the highest level has been exposed, and no one knows who can be trusted. Detective Sergeant Casey Wray worked directly to one of the senior officers who was named in the investigations, but was personally cleared of any involvement. Not everyone believes that…
Casey and a new Rookie team up to investigate a double shooting murder in downtown Rockport. The two victims are seemingly unknown to each other. It turns out that one of the victims is an extremely rich and well connected donor to local party officials. But what was he doing in the area in which he was found? Then a third murder of a young lady happens on Casey’s doorstep. Investigations suggest that the perpetrator might be an abusive ex-boyfriend of the murdered woman.
The three cases then become somewhat interwoven. The abusive ex-boyfriend is ruled out, and powerful figures in the local community are demanding answers. Throughout the investigation Casey is hampered by her immediate superior who suspects her of leaking information to the press and deliberately altering reports so as to confuse. Casey is not doing this, but who else in the department may be? She is officially taken off the case, but carries on anyway.
She works out the connection between the three murders and the story then moves to a very dramatic conclusion.
Shatter Creek is a very well worked detective story. There are many twists and many false trails. And it very much seems like an authentic account of a US police investigation in difficult times. This, I guess, is all the more remarkable because the author, Rod Reynolds, is a Brit and lives near London.
Definitely recommended for those who like their detective stories to be both exciting and quite complex.
