Psychological mystery set around EDINBURGH

Stef Campbell is signed off from work with stress. She is a paramedic and enjoys the creativity of art during her time away from the frontline. Her husband, Andy, is also a paramedic and seems to be acting quite normally, knowing that his wife may in fact be more than ‘missing’. The situation is then compounded when he is alerted to the fact that his wife’s work ID card has been found in the home of a notorious and violent criminal, who has vanished.

The couple’s cleaner, Betty, who is a quirky woman (I imagine her as Vera Stanhope from the TV series, Vera)  with thorough cleaning habits, discovers a trace of blood in their bathroom and she will not be pacified by Andy, who leads her to believe his wife is on an art retreat, with someone from her painting group.

However, it is not only Andy who seems to be harbouring secrets, Stef’s sister Alyson also seems to be complicit in the  plan.

The author does a great job of feeding in red herrings and constructs twists and turns to mislead her readers. At times the action can be a little convoluted but if you are looking for a propulsive read, which is full of energetic storytelling, then this is a good read, set mainly in Edinburgh, and in Portobello.
