Psychological thriller set in Los Angeles

13th February 2021

An Inconvenient Woman by Stéphanie Buelens – psychological thriller set in Los Angeles.

Psychological thriller set in Los Angeles

Claire and Simon are divorced. Claire believes her teenage daughter, Melody, was first molested and then murdered by Simon. The death was judged to be a tragic suicide – Simon ( a very smooth lawyer) always protested his innocence. He accuses Claire of delusions and worse.

Claire learns that Simon is about to remarry. His fiancée, Charlotte, also has a teenage daughter, Emma. Claire is absolutely determined the same fate will not happen to her. She is firm in her resolve to do whatever it takes to expose Simon for what he is. She confronts Simon in person and on the phone. Simon, believing Claire to be mentally unstable and dangerous hires Sloane, a ‘sin eater’ to get her off his back. A sin eater’s job is to handle delicate cases without involving the police. Simon is very convincing in telling his side of the story.

Sloane decides to ‘befriend’ Claire, and then to warn her off – stressing the consequences of any actions she may take. She starts off firmly believing Simon’s version of events, but is gradually convinced that Claire may be telling the truth after all. She faces a real dilemma. How can she find out what really happened? Who can help her get to the facts?

There are many twists and turns in the story. Claire is mentoring Destiny, a Los Angeles street girl with a pretty sad and unsavoury past. Sloane, posing as a journalist, interviews Destiny – and makes some startling discoveries. Is there more to the Claire / Simon story than meets the eye? Can Sloane head into areas that might expose her own father (a former policeman) as corrupt?

The story moves to a very exciting, and unexpected, climax.

An Inconvenient Woman is a genuine page turner set very firmly, in TripFiction terms, in Los Angeles. The characters are plausible, and the story is neat, well thought through. and riveting. The book is Stéphanie’s first, and she is certainly a talent to watch out for going forward.
