A thriller set over three historical time periods, you get Roman Istria, Second World War guerrilla-fighting Istria, and modern-day Istria post-Yugoslavia. The local colour is great and you really get a sense of what this land must have been like, even two millennia ago. Plus there’s lashings of culinary delights and several threads of fascinating history that run through the three stories. A book that stays in your mind long after reading it. It’ll certainly encourage you to look deeper into a coastal country that turns out to have a pretty epic history. All credit to Downey for bringing it to life.
