A couple whose long standing marriage is in crisis ( tick)a holiday to try and salvage it at the same time exploring beautiful Sardinia and the archaeological ruins, described in such an assured way that I could smell and feel the earth,(tick) add to this an encounter with an interesting, odd couple they are forced, through circumstances to travel with ( tick) and a suspenseful mystery/thriller which creeps up on you almost unwittingly. The dynamics between and within the couples is explored, the dialogue sparkles with intelligence and the protagonist’s self ruminating, wry, self deprecating low key, gentle humour has you rooting for him. It builds to a cracking, unexpected, but very satisfying finale. Take this book to Sardinia, I’ll be going for sure, , but most of all just read it.
